Michaela’s love for natural wool and fibers started from a very young age. In 2021 she wove her first prayer shawl for a friend who suffered from severe COVID to bring her comfort and a feeling of protection whilst wearing her handwoven shawl. Since then, Michaela has worked constantly on commissions for people from all backgrounds. Her unique prayer shawls have worldwide collectors and lovers.
Michaela lives closely with the seasons and is inspired by nature, ancient mythology and spirituality. The wool and fibres she uses are sustainable and come mainly from local shepherdesses and small responsible wool suppliers. Her teaching approach is calm, relaxed and patient.

Introduction Soapstone Carving Classes
Immerse yourself in the ancient & tactile art of soapstone carving
Learn to carve soapstone with Michaela Cordes.
Create your own min-soapstone sculpture in a creative, intimate gallery environment.
You will learn how to use rasps & files to create a beautiful organic sculpture. Under the expert guidance of Michaela, you will create a stunning piece of art which could be inspired by abstract shapes or working with the shape of the stone itself. Before you carve in stone, you will learn how to create a small clay model which will help to transfer the design into the stone.
Soapstone carving is a global art form with deep historical roots, spanning over 3,000 years. Ancient Egyptians made scarab amulets; Vikings crafted cooking pots; Inuit carvings depict Arctic life.
Soapstone is a soft stone making it perfect for beginners, no experience or artistic ability is needed.
Group size is limited to five people in order to maximise the amount of personal and practical tuition. A course consists of four 2-hour sessions run weekly on a Friday starting 9th October.
Introduction cost is £100 for the four morning sessions 10:00am-12:00pm and includes the use of all necessary tools, a soapstone (free of any harmful substances) and refreshments. If you like you can extend your course at the end. There is also a possibility to exhibit the groups finished sculptures in the gallery at the end of the course.
Please bring dust masks if you are sensitive to dust, an apron and lightweight gloves.
